This year it is a very special Spring equinox on March 20th 2015. Not only will there be a Spring equinox, but also a Supermoon and a total solar eclipse. Three celestial events happening on March 20th 2015. Unfortunately we can’t see it. Luckily our friends in Europe, Asia and Africa can.
This story is about the celebration of Persephone’s return from the underworld. She was abducted by Hades, God of the underworld. Her mother Demeter, the Goddess of earth and grain, was so sad that her daughter was abducted, that she caused Winter and death to cover the earth. Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds in the underworld and has to return for six months every year, the months of Fall and Winter. When Persephone returns, her mother is filled with joy which makes the earth bloom every year. When she leaves het mother is sad and Fall will starts.
The vernal equinox celebrates the balance of light and dark. This equinox happens in March and in September each year. The day and night have the same length. At the Spring equinox a shift takes plave from the earth energy of Winter to the airiness of Spring. Trees begin to sprout their leafs, birds begin to sing again, flowers will start to bloom. Nature is celebrating and welcoming Spring.
The Easter Bunny is a continuation of the reverence shown during the spring rites to the rabbit as a symbol of abundance. The honoring of such emblems of fertility extended to eggs.
The egg serves as a representation of new life. It stands for the renewing power of nature and, by extension, agriculture. The egg can also symbolize regeneration in a spiritual or psychological sense.
The ritual of coloring Easter eggs stems from the tradition of painting eggs in bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring.
